Modular Tooling

Sandvik Coromant offers an extensive range of around 40,000 standard products for any machine type.

Setting up a new machine tool with modular tooling provides the best opportunity to extract maximum efficiency and machine utilization from a new installation. Our three leading interfaces are:

Coromant Capto®

Designed for:

  • Turning centers: quick change and high-pressure coolant delivery.
  • Multi-task machines and machining centers: rotating spindle interface, modular tooling, and quick change.
  • Available in six sizes, there is a flexible Coromant Capto® solution for every need: C3-C10, Diameters: 32, 40, 50, 63, 80 and 100.

CoroTurn® SL

A ‘serrated lock’ modular system of adapters and cutting heads for internal turning, grooving, threading, boring and multi-task machining. Suitable for turning centers, lathes and multi-task machines

Coromant EH

Small diameter tooling featuring an exchangeable cutting head with many variants for different machine types and spindles – machining centers, multi-task machines and driven tool holders

Useful product information

Coromant Capto bending stiffness

An independent study of Coromant Capto is comparison with HSK clamping units has demonstrated that higher clamping forces translate into increased bending stiffness and torque stability.

Chuck selection

Chuck type recommendations depend upon a range of factors including

  • application - end milling, drilling, tapping or reaming
  • materials and tolerance requirements
  • production type - high-volume or mixed
  • machining with coolant - through tool or external

Sandvik Coromant offers a variety of options to fit the above requirements:

  • high-precision hydraulic chucks
  • Shrink fit
  • power chucks
  • ER collet chuck
  • Weldon chucks

Machine adapted clamping units — MACUs

Sandvik Coromant’s clamping units and driven tool holders are designed to fit turret interfaces with unique bolt patterns specific to each machine tool supplier.
MACUs utilise Coromant Capto® modular tooling with through coolant delivery on all clamping units. Their high rigidity and precision provide accurate tool positioning and stability.

Machines requiring long reach tooling

When machining with long overhangs with tool diameters exceeding 4 x D, vibration will start to become an issue – this negatively impacts surface finish and output.  It is not possible to avoid vibration entirely in metal cutting operations, but Sandvik Coromant offers a range of options to minimize it.

Modular tooling options

Sandvik Coromant has a range of modular tooling systems enabling assemblies to be created for a specific application. A relatively small inventory can build a huge number of combinations, allowing common tooling systems to be used throughout a customer’s facility  regardless of the machine interface.

Data chips for Coromant Capto® and HSK adapters

Sandvik Coromant offers a service that prepares standard Coromant Capto® and HSK adapters with a chip hole, with or without a mounted data chip. The data chip is available in two memory sizes: 511 and 2047 bytes. The data chip hole is prepared according to DIN standard 69873.
