Machining of automotive engine components

The engine is responsible for generating the power to move the vehicle. Today it is under extensive development due to the need for reduction in emissions and increased power efficiency.
New materials, legislations and other driving forces lead to heavy investments in R&D. The main trend is down-sizing of combustion engines to minimize the environmental footprint. Another development is the electrification of powertrains.
Sandvik Coromant offers solutions and tools for engine components, backed up with in-depth application know-how. We have a global presence with dedicated engineering teams supporting the automotive industry with several high-quality solutions. Here we are sharing a selection of productive solutions for some of the challenging features in engine component production.

Cylinder block
The cylinder block serves as the main structure of the engine and it is the housing of several different moving parts that together generate the power to move the vehicle.

Cylinder head
The cylinder head conveys air and fuel to the combustion chamber and serves as a cover for the cylinders. It is also the housing for several different components.

Crankshaft
This component transforms linear movement and power into rotational in order to move the shafts and consequently, the vehicle.

Cam shaft
The cam shaft controls the operation of the valves, giving synchronization to the combustion cycle.

Connecting rod
The connecting rod transfers the linear movement from the pistons to rotate the crankshaft.
