CoroTap® 100

CoroTap 100 is a range of straight flute taps that are optimized for short chipping ISO K, ISO N and ISO H materials. For long chipping ISO P materials, the chip breaker design is appropriate. The taps are suitable for both through and blind holes.

The hole

For basic hole size calculations, use the appropriate formulas for cutting taps.

  • D = Hole diameter (mm, inch)
  • TD = Nominal thread diameter (mm, inch)
  • TP = Thread pitch (mm, inch) drill size for M10 × 1.5 cutting tap = 10-1.5=8.5 mm

The component

When the hole is analyzed, have a look at the workpiece material, component shape and quantity.

  • Machinability?
  • Material hardness?
  • Alloy elements?

The machine

The machine influences:

  • The type of operation
  • Which type of tool holders and/or collets to use

Always consider:

  • Machine stability
  • Spindle speed
  • Coolant volume and concentration
  • Workpiece clamping

Tool holding

The CoroChuck™ 970 is designed for stable and precise tapping in all materials. It improves tap tool life and surface quality, and offers the highest process security.

Application considerations, CoroTap® 100 -PM

Coolant

  • Coolant is required
  • Not compatible with MQL (minimum quantity lubrication)
  • Proper coolant concentration, flow and pressure are critical for effective chip evacuation and maintaining thread quality and finish
  • For blind holes, use internal coolant
    • Use caution when applying external or through-collet coolant, as it may push chips back into the hole or flutes
  • For through holes, use external coolant via collet and/or external nozzles
  • If possible, reduce clearance at bottom of hole to
2–3×TP to minimize remnant chips left in bottom of the hole

Machine setups

  • No helix on taps to remove chips, so there will always be some remnant of chips existing in the holes
  • This can be a better trade off than nesting on the tap causing catastrophic breakages
  • Suitable for horizontal setups
  • Vertical setups:
    • Manual removal of chips may be necessary
    • Take action to minimize remnant chips by optimizing coolant, drill depth clearance, and E chamfer version as an alternative solution
    • For optimal performance, use a rigid tapping cycle (e.g., Fanuc M29) with rigid or SynchroFlex® holders (e.g., CoroChuck® 970)
